About Us

In 1990, Alex Fleming founded DEMAND SIDE ENERGY Consultants Inc. (DSE), Canadian-based energy management firm specializing in commercial and industrial energy audits, energy action plans and greenhouse gas emission inventories and reporting. More than 500 projects have been successfully completed under his direction and the firm’s unique and successful approach to technology transfer and Demand Side Management programs is widely recognized.

Mr. Fleming offers over 20 years experience in commercial and industrial facility energy audits, energy use verification and engineering reviews for energy performance contracts. In addition to the site-based work, his DSM Program design development and delivery is broad, including significant work with twelve Canadian electric and gas utilities.

Mr. Fleming's work on DSM Program design, development and delivery is well regarded throughout both Canada and the United States. Some of his recent publications and presentations are regarded as being among the most thoroughly discussed. He has contributed widely to the development of Canadian and international utility efficiency programs, with significant expertise with high-efficiency motors.

Davoud Hafezi joined the Demand Side Energy team in 2007. Prior to joining the Demand Side Energy (DSE) team in 2007, Davoud was pursuing graduate studies in Physics, in San Jose California. With his BSc in Electrical Engineering, Davoud was enrolled in Single Subject Credential Programming at San Jose State University.

Davoud is knowledgeable in commercial and residential building energy systems and performances, and is experienced in modeling building energy end-use components, HVAC systems and operations, and envelope characteristics using various programs. An experienced energy performance analyst for industrial plants, Davoud contributed to the development of the ongoing motor management program for BC Hydro, as well as development of a set of energy conservation measures for a number of industrial plants across Canada.

Davoud contributed to the evaluation and local training of the release of Natural Resources Canada RETScreen version 4.1 energy auditing software.

Justine Shindak joined the DSE team in 2009 as a Green Building Specialist. A graduate of Architectural/Engineering Technology at Red River College, Justine’s work experience includes working on site with contractors and tradesmen as an inspector for Stantec Consulting, and working on civil plans as a CAD technologist for IBI Group in Calgary.

Justine is LEED AP certified, and is experienced in drafting (CAD), as well as building modelling using HOT 2000.

Brian Derkach joined the Demand Side Energy team in 2009.
